S Job all of chapters 3 & 4 – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=job+3&version=NIV
O Job is very depressed. All of chapter 3 is him wishing he had never been born so that he wouldn't have to endure his present suffering. Chapter 4 is Job's friend's response to him. His friend tells him, "now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed. 6 Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?"
A Job's friend's advice is to take comfort in his own righteousness. The problem with that advice is that no one is righteous compared to God, not Job and especially not us. Yet when you add Christ to the equation it becomes good advice. When we are depressed and discouraged the righteousness of Christ is our joy and our hope.
P Dear Lord, thank You for Jesus' righteousness when mine is lacking. Remind me of that everyday so that I may have confidence and hope when I am discouraged and depressed. In Jesus name, amen.
