Scripture: Psalm 121
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
Observations:
In these verses God makes a strong promise to all His people that He will protect us and watch over us. Verse 8 grants this promise to us now and forever.
Application:
The first thing that jumps to my mind when I read this Psalm is a question. How can God claim to keep us from all harm when there is so much suffering in this life? Here is the best answer I can come up with. God has in mind out eternal wellbeing when our perspective is right now. Sometimes suffering is for our eternal protection. Most Christians have a story about how suffering brought him or her closer to God. Even death is an eternal benefit to us because it limits the time we live in sin. Jesus was also willing to suffer for our eternal wellbeing. He was crucified so that God’s promise of eternal protection would come true.
Prayer:
Lord God, thank You for Your promise of protection forevermore. Help us to see how even our suffering has an eternal benefit. In Jesus name, Amen.
