Scripture: Luke 13:4-5
Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
Observation:
Jesus is encouraging people to repent and teaching them that bad things don't happen to people because they are worse sinners than anyone else. He uses an example of 18 people who were killed when a tower fell. He says that they weren't any worse than them. He uses that story to remind His audience that everyone will die and be punished for sin unless they repent. This is law because Jesus is showing them their sin.
Application:
This is a reminder to us that when bad things happen that are out of our control, it is not punishment for our sin. It is however a reminder to all of us that we are called to repentance in Jesus Christ. All those who do not repent will be punished for their sin in death. We are called to turn away from our disobedience and toward God's grace. In Jesus Christ we are then promised forgiveness and life.
Prayer:
Lord God, Help me to never think that I am better than others, and remind me to repent and turn away from all thoughts, words and deeds that are contrary to Your will. Help me to always turn toward You so that I would receive Your grace in Jesus Christ. Amen.
